Total Number of Medical Colleges and MBBS Seats in India

India has a total of 84,649 MBBS seats in 562 Medical Colleges currently. According to the data, Karnataka tops the list of states with the highest number of MBBS seats, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. The 61 medical colleges in Karnataka have a total of 9445 seats. Maharashtra has a total of 9180 MBBS seats in 60 medical colleges. Tamil Nadu, which is third on the list, has 53 medical colleges with 8025 MBBS seats.

Uttar Pradesh has 57 medical colleges with 7975 MBBS seats and Gujarat has 30 medical colleges with 5700 seats. Chandigarh, Mizoram and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have 1 Medical College each with 100 MBBS seats in their respective GMCs. The state of Sikkim, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have 1 Medical College each with 50 seats.

Admission Process in Medical Colleges

Admission Process in medical college consist of Three following Steps

NEET UG Exam for Admission in Medical College

To get MBBS Admission In India the candidate must pass the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination which is conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency). The NEET exam is conducted every year to set a qualification limit for students to get MBBS admission in India.

NEET UG Counselling

After receiving the results, students are invited to a counselling session where they are informed about available colleges throughout India. The counselling process is based on the NEET ranking. The students who score the highest marks in their NEET exams will get the first priority and can select the best MBBS colleges in India and get MBBS admission in India. NEET UG Counselling is done by MCC for 15% Seats and Respective State wise for 85%.

Abroad Medical Colleges

Nowadays, many countries offer quality medical education at very affordable prices. Students from various countries including India, China, Nepal, and Bangladesh are willing to pursue MBBS studies abroad. The universities in these countries are recognized by major organizations like WHO and are registered with the National Medical Council (NMC), formerly known as Medical Council Of India (NMC/MCI).

Medical College: Eligibility Criteria

The National Medical Commission (NMC) sets the eligibility criteria for MBBS admission in India. Only candidates fulfilling the eligibility requirements are considered for MBBS admission. Candidates found ineligible at any stage of MBBS admission will have their candidature cancelled. Check the MBBS admission eligibility criteria below.

  • Academic qualifications:To secure MBBS admission in India, candidates must have passed class 12 from a recognised board.
  • Subjects studied:To pursue an MBBS course, students should have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in their class 11 and 12.
  • Minimum marks required:For MBBS admission in India candidates must score at least 50% marks in the qualifying examination. For SC, ST, and OBC category candidates, the minimum marks required for MBBS admission are 40%.
  • Age: Aspirants should have attained the minimum age of 17 years for getting admission to MBBS in India. The upper age limit for MBBS admission is 25 years.

Medical College: Documents Required

Below mentioned documents are required at time of admission through all India Quota.

  • NEET UG Admit Card
  • NEET  UG Result /Rank Card
  • Date of Birth Certificate
  • Class 10th Certificate
  • 12th Class Certificate
  • Class 12th Marksheet
  • Provisional Allotment letter
  • Identity Proof (Aadhar Card/Voter Id,Ration Card,Passport, Driving Licence)
  • Caste /PwD Certificate if applicable
  • Eight(08)passport size photograph same as affixed on the application form
  • Medical Certificate
  • Character certificate
