Who falls under the NRI Category?

Punjab NRI Quota MBBS Admission
Punjab has a large number of NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) settled abroad, and there is an NRI quota in government and private medical colleges in the state. There are a good number of NRI seats in government and private medical colleges in Punjab. The MBBS fee in Punjab for NRI students is lower than in other states.
Eligibility criteria:
- Candidates who want to apply for NRI quota seats must obtain a provisional eligibility/equivalency certificate from BFUHS, Faridkot, and qualify NEET-UG-2022. They must then apply on the prescribed proforma available on the website, along with the prescribed fee for seats under the NRI quota.
- Only NRIs/children of NRIs who belong to the state of Punjab or NRIs/children of NRIs who belong to an Indian state other than Punjab are eligible to take admission in Punjab under the NRI quota. NRI-sponsored students are not allowed to take admission in Punjab under the NRI quota.

- Students applying under the NRI quota must appear in person at BFUHS, Faridkot, for document verification. After document verification, students will be issued an eligibility certificate. Only students with an eligibility certificate will be allowed to participate in the NRI quota seat counselling.
- The centralized counselling for NRI quota seats will be held before the counselling for other categories.
- OCI/PIO candidates will only be considered for 15% of the NRI quota seats.

Under this policy, a non-resident Indian (NRI) is a person of Indian origin, whether holding an Indian passport or a foreign passport, who is either permanently or temporarily settled outside India and in either case:
- Is taking up employment outside India; or
- Is carrying on a business or vocation outside India; or
- For any other purpose, in such circumstances, as would indicate his intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.
Note: –The first preference will be given to NRIs/OCIs/PIOs belonging to the state of Punjab, and then to those belonging to other states.

Gujarat NRI Quota MBBS Admission
Gujarat is one of the most preferred states for MBBS admission under the NRI quota. There are a good number of NRI seats available in semi-government and private medical colleges in Gujarat. The MBBS fee in Gujarat is also relatively low compared to other states.
Eligibility criteria:
- Only NRIs or children of NRIs who are originally from Gujarat or any other Indian state are eligible to apply for MBBS admission under the NRI quota.
- NRI sponsored students are not eligible for MBBS admission under the NRI quota in Gujarat.
