The NRI quota, also known as the Non-Resident Indian quota, is a special reservation of seats for NRI candidates in medical education in India. The NRI quota is typically 15% of the total seats in private and Government medical colleges.
NRIs are Indian citizens who live or work outside of India. They may also be Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs).
Eligibility criteria for MBBS admission Through NRI Quota in government and private medical colleges
To be eligible for the NRI quota in government and private medical colleges candidates must meet the following criteria:
• They must be an NRI, PIO, or OCI.
• They must have passed the NEET UG exam with a valid score.
• They must have completed Class 12 with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

NRI students can apply for MBBS Admission for NRI quota through the All india or state counselling process. Each state has its own counselling process for NRI seats. Students must register for the counselling process in the state where they wish to study.

Himachal Pradesh is one of the most preferred states for MBBS admission under NRI quota. There are many reasons for this, including the state’s pleasant weather, demographic makeup, and low NRI quota fees. NRIs and children of NRIs who are either residents of Himachal Pradesh or residents of other Indian states are eligible for MBBS admission in Himachal Pradesh under the NRI quota. NRI-sponsored students are also eligible. The following are some important points about MBBS seats under the NRI quota in Himachal Pradesh:
  • A non-refundable registration and counseling fee of Rs. 2,000 will be charged to NRI students.
  • The cut-off for NRI seats in private medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh is lower than the cut-off for NRI seats in other states.
  • The number of NRI seats in government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh is limited.
The preference for admission under NRI category shall be considered as follows:
  • Actual NRIs/OCIs/PIOs candidates or children/wards of NRIs/OCIs/PIOs who originally belong to the State of Himachal Pradesh or any Indian state and union territory.
  • NRI-Sponsor: If the first-degree relation of the student is an NRI and residing abroad, and the candidate meets the following conditions:
    • He/she should be the nearest relation.
    • The nearest relation includes the following blood relations:
      • Real brother and sister of father (real uncle and aunt).
      • Real brother and sister of mother (real maternal uncle and maternal aunt).
      • Father and mother of father (grandfather and grandmother).
      • Father and mother of mother (maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother).
      • First-degree paternal and maternal cousins.
    • The NRI sponsor should be ordinarily residing abroad.
